Waking Up For The Hunt, Coffee or Energy Drink?
It takes a lot of effort for me to wake up completely. I am a very deep sleeper. 2 years ago I was in the back seat coming home from a Colorado hunting trip and we blew a tire on our trailer. We had pull over, leave the trailer, go to wal-mart and get a tire, drive back, hook up the trailer, and replace the tire. I slept through the whole thing and didn’t hear about it until breakfast the next morning. I have tried coffee, but it has little if any effect. I mentioned in my question “Gatorade or Water?” that I do a lot of walking on our Colorado hunting trip. To get where we need to be it requires waking up at like 3:30am to 4:00am mountain time. So bringing into consideration the excessive amount of walking, high elevation, need for energy, and what time I need to wake up, what should I drink in the morning? Should I stick to coffee or is it ok to drink some sort of energy drink? And if it is ok, what energy drink should I use(Low carb, sugar free, and etc.)?
I would skip the coffee unless you are addicted to the caffeine, and for that matter the energy drinks too that early in the AM. I hunt the upper elevations of the Colorado Rockies myself and always start my mornings eating a good breakfast with some protein and carbs wether we start out in base camp or a temp camp higher up.. You’ll be getting enough excercise to work off any calories you take in anyway. Consider some Orange Juice of low sugar Fruit Juice Grapefruit,Cranberry blend, Grape) in place of coffee or energy drinks. A little natural sugar beats the caffeine “slam” you will get with the energy drink. If it’s a hot drink you want try hot tea with lemon.
I would also suggest if you have time to get checked before you go,let your doctor test you for sleep apnea. You might have a mild case that would be worsened by the lower oxygen levels at higher elevations. Either way I wish you good luck and a successful trip.
