So how does the stock market work?

I work at walmart and recently decided to start buying stock. 20 dollars out of my paycheck goes to walmart stock. so what exactly do i do? how am i making money? I have no idea how this truely works because a share is valued at 50 dollars right now so what does my 20 dollars do?
